Fertitta Center

Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler played their college ball in this building when it was Hofheinz Pavilion, home of the Phi Slama Jama teams that changed basketball. The arena at 3875 Holman Street on the University of Houston campus opened in 1969 and served the Cougars for half a century before a 60-million-dollar transformation - anchored by a 20-million-dollar gift from Houston restaurateur and Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta - rebuilt it from the concourses in. Reopened in December 2018 as the Fertitta Center, the arena kept its distinctive circular concrete shell but emerged with an entirely new interior: about 7,100 seats pulled tight to the floor, a centre-hung videoboard, club spaces and a dramatically steeper, louder bowl designed to weaponise home-court advantage. The renovation deliberately traded capacity for intensity, and sellouts have been routine as Houston basketball returned to the sport's top tier. The building's history deserves the reverence: as Hofheinz Pavilion it hosted the Cougars through the Guy Lewis era, the Phi Slama Jama Final Four teams of 1983 and 1984, and decades of Southwest Conference battles, plus concerts and campus events. The Elvin Hayes era predated it by a season, but the program's modern identity - through Kelvin Sampson's Final Four teams of the 2020s - lives in this room. Beyond men's and women's basketball and volleyball, the arena hosts commencements, speaker events and occasional concerts, though its primary public identity is now unambiguous: one of the loudest sub-8,000-seat home courts in American college basketball, with student sections that stand for the duration. The campus sits three miles southeast of downtown Houston, reachable off Interstate 45 and the Gulf Freeway or via the METRORail Purple Line, which stops within a short walk. Game-day parking uses adjacent garages with prepaid passes recommended, and the Third Ward's food landmarks - Frenchy's Chicken above all - are part of the ritual.
