Fillmore Auditorium - Denver

Titanic survivor Molly Brown bought the first car built in this building. The Fillmore Auditorium at 1510 North Clarkson Street, on Colfax Avenue in Denver's Capitol Hill, opened in 1907 as the Mammoth Roller Skating Rink - a 32,000-dollar pleasure palace styled like an English seaside pavilion - and spent its first century cycling through lives as improbable as any venue in America. After the skating fad cooled, the Fritchle Electric Automobile Company built nearly 500 electric cars here between 1910 and 1917, Mrs Brown's among them. From 1935 the hall ran as Mammoth Gardens, a sports house of ice hockey, boxing and wrestling that gave Denver its first professional hockey and basketball teams - and a 1960 James Brown show hinted at what the room could be. Promoter Stuart Green converted it to a rock hall in 1968, openly hoping to rival Bill Graham's Fillmores; in eight chaotic months Mammoth Gardens hosted The Who, the Grateful Dead, Joe Cocker and Jethro Tull before the city pressured it closed in 1970. Decades of intermittent life as a market and the Mammoth Events Center followed, until a 1999 renovation restored the building's grandeur, installed modern production and reopened it - completing the irony - as the Fillmore Auditorium under Bill Graham Presents, with Trey Anastasio playing the first night on 19 May 1999. Now operated by Live Nation, the 3,900-capacity room is Colorado's largest indoor general-admission venue, its chandeliered hall hosting everyone from Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Paul Simon to Widespread Panic, Tech N9ne and the touring peaks of each new decade. The sprung wooden floor and wraparound bars keep the roller-rink DNA visible under the rock production. The Colfax and Clarkson corner is a short walk from the Ogden and Bluebird theatres, making Capitol Hill Denver's live-music spine; street and lot parking fill early, and rideshare is the standard play. Most shows are general admission with limited box seating - arrive early for the rail.
