Jack Johnson slept in the manager's apartment because no Kansas City hotel would rent the heavyweight champion a room; Gypsy Rose Lee made her unplanned first burlesque appearance on the same stage in 1929. The Folly Theater at 300 West 12th Street opened on 23 September 1900 as the Standard Theatre - a Louis Curtiss design whose exposed lightbulbs showed off a technology barely a generation old - and it is now Kansas City's oldest theatre. Its century ran through every name and vice the entertainment business offered: as the Century it booked Al Jolson, Fanny Brice and Eddie Foy alongside prizefights with Johnson and Jack Dempsey; the Shuberts ran it as the Missouri in the 1920s, when a young Humphrey Bogart trod its boards; and from 1941 the Folly Burlesque drew soldiers from Union Station with Sally Rand and Tempest Storm. Decline followed the form - striptease gave way to adult films, and the theatre closed quietly in 1973 with demolition scheduled. The rescue of "the Grand Lady of 12th Street" became a landmark Kansas City preservation fight: a 1974 National Register listing, a City Council delay ordinance and a 4.4-million-dollar restoration brought the house back, reopening on 10 November 1981. Since then the non-profit Performing Arts Foundation has run the 1,078-seat room as a working theatre rather than a museum. Programming leans into both halves of its identity. The Folly Jazz Series, running since the late 1980s, made Downbeat's list of the world's top hundred jazz venues; the Kids Series brings curriculum-based shows to tens of thousands of schoolchildren; Harriman-Jewell classical dates and chamber music share the calendar; and the Kansas City Burlesque Festival returns the stage, knowingly, to its bawdy roots. The theatre sits downtown across from the convention centre, a short walk from the Power and Light District's bars, with garage parking on the surrounding blocks. Its scale is the appeal: big enough for world-class names, small enough that the back row still catches the wink.
