Four thousand tons of Palo Pinto sandstone, laid by Depression-era relief workers dreaming of Versailles, built the rose garden that started it all. The Fort Worth Botanic Garden at 3220 Botanic Garden Boulevard, in the city's Cultural District, was established in 1934 around that 1933 Rose Garden - making it the oldest major botanic garden in Texas, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 120-acre campus grew from Rock Springs Park, land first acquired in 1912, and today holds more than twenty themed gardens and thousands of plant species. The showpieces bracket half a century: the terraced Rose Garden with its shelter house, ramp and reflection pond, rededicated after restoration in 2017, and the 7.5-acre Japanese Garden of 1973 - koi ponds, a teahouse, moon bridges and maples that turn incandescent each November, celebrated at spring and fall Japanese festivals. Since 2020 the garden has been managed by the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, whose research campus adjoins the grounds, folding a working herbarium and conservation science program into the visitor experience. The combined institution runs classes, exhibitions and one of the region's busiest wedding and event trades across its historic spaces. Music is a summer tradition: the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra's Concerts in the Garden series, running since 1991, fills warm evenings with orchestral pops, tribute nights and the flag-waving Old-Fashioned Family Fireworks Picnic around Independence Day - a series so embedded that the garden's master plan contemplates a permanent concert venue to house it. Visiting is a half-day at minimum: timed admission tickets cover the grounds daily, the Japanese Garden repays unhurried walking, and the rest of the Cultural District - the Kimbell, the Modern, the Amon Carter - sits five minutes east, with the Will Rogers complex between. Spring rose season and autumn maple colour are the connoisseur windows.
