An eighteen-year-old named Cassius Clay won a six-round decision over Tunney Hunsaker here in 1960 - the first professional fight of the man who became Muhammad Ali. Freedom Hall, at 937 Phillips Lane on the Kentucky Exposition Center grounds five miles south of downtown Louisville, opened in 1956 with a name chosen from 6,500 entries in a statewide essay contest won by a high school senior. The building was designed, unusually, around horses: the Kentucky State Fair World's Championship Horse Show required a show ring nearly 300 feet long, so the floor dwarfs a basketball court and the permanent seating wraps a space that still hosts the nation's premier saddlebred competition and the North American International Livestock Exposition each November. Basketball made it mythic. Freedom Hall hosted six NCAA Final Fours between 1958 and 1969 - Kentucky, California, Cincinnati twice, Texas Western's aftermath era and UCLA's rise - and the University of Louisville called it home for 54 seasons through 2010, packing 18,865 seats after the 1984 refurbishment lowered the floor. The ABA's Kentucky Colonels, with Artis Gilmore and Dan Issel, won the 1975 championship in this room, and Bellarmine University returned college ball to the building in 2020. The concert ledger runs just as deep: Elvis played it in 1971 and gave one of his final performances here in May 1977; Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Kiss, AC/DC and Van Halen all rolled through, and it was a fixture of the 1960s Motortown Revue circuit. Today the hall hosts touring shows, championship equestrian and livestock events, graduations and fair-season spectaculars under the Kentucky State Fair Board. Visitors find it easiest by car - the Expo Center sits at the I-65/I-264 junction beside the airport with acres of parking - and event traffic peaks hard during August's State Fair. The building is a working piece of mid-century Americana: horses, hoops and rock and roll under one roof.
