Freedom Mobile Arch

The largest free-span timber roof on the planet now arcs over Hastings Park - Vancouver built its first major new amphitheatre in six decades and crowned it in wood. The Freedom Mobile Arch, at 2901 East Hastings Street on the Pacific National Exhibition fairgrounds, opened on 5 June 2026, replacing the humble PNE Amphitheatre - a "temporary" structure from the 1960s that had somehow served for sixty years. Revery Architecture's design is the headline: a mass-timber canopy of roughly 900 tons of arching wood and 800 tons of steel, engineered by Fast + Epp and built to LEED standards, sheltering an open-air bowl that scales from 1,500 to 10,000 guests with North Shore mountain views behind the lawn. It is the first permanent major entertainment venue added to Hastings Park since the Pacific Coliseum in 1968. The project traces to the city's 2010 Hastings Park master plan, won council approvals in 2019 and 2021, and landed its ten-year naming deal with telecom Freedom Mobile in 2024. Its debut summer was historic by default: the venue served as the FIFA Fan Festival site for Vancouver's 2026 World Cup hosting - under a neutral name for the tournament, per FIFA rules - before the concert era began with Live Nation bookings like Alabama Shakes. For the PNE the Arch restores earning power lost when swaths of old fairground buildings were demolished in the late 2000s: the venue carries the storied Summer Night Concerts of the annual fair - a Vancouver ritual for generations - plus standalone headline tours, cultural festivals and community events across the season, with hospitality suites and premium decks folded under the timber crown. Getting there follows PNE habit: buses run along East Hastings and Renfrew with SkyTrain connections nearby, event parking fills the fairground lots at premium rates, and fair-time crowds reward transit. The lawn, the mountains and that roof make it an instant Vancouver landmark.
