The murals inside were painted by the same artists who decorated Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, and the ceiling still carries their mythological film goddess standing over a reel of film. The Granada Theater, at 3524 Greenville Avenue in Dallas's Lower Greenville neighbourhood, opened on 16 January 1946 with Mildred Pierce - a 950-seat Art Deco movie palace that became one of Texas's best-loved music venues. Built by Phil Isley Enterprises - whose founder's daughter became Hollywood star Jennifer Jones - and designed by Raymond F. Smith, the theatre courted postwar families with touches like soundproof crying rooms for mothers with infants, all beneath a neon marquee that still blazes 1940s Hollywood glitz over Greenville Avenue. Its second act took decades to stick. A 1977 conversion added a stage, lighting and sound - Kenny Rogers opened the room - but the music hall faltered, and the building cycled through revival cinema, adult films and a drafthouse era. Operators in 2002 brought back live concerts with bookings as big as Bob Dylan and Dolly Parton, and in 2004 owners Mike Schoder and Julia Garton committed fully, rebuilding the Granada into the roughly 1,000-capacity independent venue it remains. The modern Granada is a Dallas institution: Best Live Music Venue in the Dallas Observer awards across multiple years and a national top-50 club ranking, with a calendar spanning indie rock, Americana, jam bands, metal and hip-hop, and its sister bar Sundown at Granada serving food and rooftop drinks next door. Lower Greenville's restaurant-and-bar strip surrounds the marquee, making dinner-and-a-show a one-block affair; parking spreads across nearby lots and neighbourhood streets. The untouched murals alone justify arriving before the opener. The modern operation invested heavily in the room itself - a concert-grade sound system, resurfaced stage and restored seating tiers sit beneath the preserved 1946 ceiling murals, and the venue's team has made a point of protecting the building's Deco fabric through every upgrade. The marquee's neon was restored rather than replaced, keeping one of the last working examples of Greenville Avenue's postwar streetscape lit nightly.
