The oldest nightclub in San Francisco was built in 1907 by a French-quarter impresario fresh out of jail, and its balconies, frescoed ceilings and marble columns have survived every reinvention since. It opened as Blanco's Cafe amid the post-earthquake rebuilding boom, a bordello-adjacent palace of gilt and plaster run by Antone Blanco. In 1936 dancer Sally Rand - famous for her ostrich-feather fan dance - made it the Music Box, her supper club; decades of decline followed until 1972, when new owners restored the room and christened it the Great American Music Hall. The bookings since read like a history of American music: the Grateful Dead recorded the 1975 live album One From The Vault here, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington played the jazz years, and Van Morrison, Bobby McFerrin, Arcade Fire and Mumford and Sons have all worked the room. Robin Williams filmed a landmark 1986 HBO special on its stage. Since 2004 the hall has been run by the team behind Slim's, and today it books indie rock, roots, jazz, metal and comedy most nights of the week, with dinner-and-show tickets that unlock the balcony tables - the best seats in a room where every sightline is short. All-ages admission is the norm, unusual among historic clubs. The Tenderloin block demands city-smarts after dark - rideshare to the door is the standard play, with paid lots on O'Farrell nearby. Inside, a century of plasterwork and rock history make the point: rooms like this do not get built anymore. San Francisco has formally recognised what the room means: the hall holds a place on the city's Legacy Business Registry, and it survived the pandemic years that permanently closed its sister club Slim's, emerging as the flagship of its operators' remaining portfolio. The balcony wraps three sides of the floor on gilded columns, the kitchen still serves full dinner packages on most headline nights, and the room's roughly 470 seated to 600 standing configurations let it host everything from seated songwriter evenings to full-volume rock shows.
