Gregory Gym

Elvis Presley played here in 1956, Nirvana in 1991, and the Texas Longhorns' volleyball team defends one of college sport's great home-court advantages here every autumn. Gregory Gymnasium, at 2101 Speedway on the University of Texas campus in Austin, opened in 1930 and remains the university's most storied indoor arena. The Spanish Renaissance building - part of campus architect Paul Cret's golden-era ensemble - was named for Thomas Watt Gregory, a UT regent and US attorney general under Woodrow Wilson who led the fundraising. For three decades it was the biggest indoor venue in Austin, home to Longhorn basketball until 1977 and the default stage for anything the city needed indoors: concerts, commencements, registration lines and speeches, including a young Elvis on a package tour and decades of touring acts. Its modern athletic life belongs to Texas volleyball: the 4,000-seat arena has sold out season after season as the Longhorns stacked national championships, and students camp for seats in a room whose low roof and tight sidelines turn crowd noise into a genuine weapon. A 1997 renovation and later additions folded the building into one of the largest campus recreation complexes in the country - Gregory Gym Aquatic Complex's outdoor leisure pool, weight rooms, climbing wall and courts serve tens of thousands of students - while the historic arena kept its varsity role. Speedway's pedestrian mall puts the gym at the walking heart of campus, a few minutes from the Tower and the Blanton Museum; game-day parking fills the San Jacinto garages. The building is approaching its centenary as that rarest thing - a 1930 gym still doing every job it was built for. The concert ledger deserves its own paragraph: beyond Elvis's 1956 stop, the hall carried Austin's big-show trade for decades - Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen and Frank Zappa all played it before the Erwin Center opened, and Nirvana's October 1991 date, weeks after Nevermind's release, remains one of the most retold gigs in city history. Texas volleyball has repaid the building's second act with the best attendance figures in the sport, selling out the arena for entire seasons during its championship runs of the 2020s.
