Hi-Dive

Vampire Weekend played here to 50 people, and the club printed its worst one-star Yelp review on a T-shirt. The Hi-Dive, at 7 South Broadway in Denver's Baker neighbourhood, is the city's definitive independent rock dive: a 260-capacity musician-owned club that has anchored the South Broadway strip since November 2003. The little blue building had music in it long before the name: as Seven South it hosted Mazzy Star, Neutral Milk Hotel and 311 through the 1990s, then spent two years as Deadhead bar Quixote's True Blue. Brooklyn transplants Matthew LaBarge and Allison Housley bought it in 2003, reopened it as the hi-dive in nine days flat, and opened the attached Sputnik bar next door as its satellite. The booking record became legend fast: early bookers landed MGMT, St. Vincent, Fleet Foxes and The National on their way up, and the club remains the standard first serious stage for Denver bands - the room where local acts graduate from house shows and prove they can draw. Employees-turned-owners led by Matty Clark bought the club in 2012, keeping it independent and musician-run. The operation is pure neighbourhood rock club: open daily from 4 pm with happy-hour Rainiers, free pool on Mondays, a shotgun bar plastered in ephemera up front and the shows in back - punk, indie, metal, country and comedy across a calendar that peaks each summer when the Underground Music Showcase floods South Broadway and the Hi-Dive serves as its beating heart. Practical notes: shows are mostly 21-plus with some 16-plus bookings, cover runs modest, and the 0 and 52 buses run Broadway with street parking on the side blocks. The bathroom's horror-movie reputation is part of the charm - this is a dive by proud self-description, with one of the best booking batting averages in the West. The Underground Music Showcase relationship deserves its own line: Denver's biggest indie festival grew up around South Broadway with the Hi-Dive as its de facto headquarters, and UMS weekend remains the one time each summer when the club's stage runs essentially around the clock. Between festivals, the room's reputation travels well beyond Colorado - national booking agents treat a Hi-Dive date as the standard Denver play for rising acts, which is why the wall of past show posters reads like a who's-who of the last two decades of independent music.
