High Limit Room

No bar, no booze, no age limit - just a PA, a marquee and the conviction that hardcore is for the kids. High Limit Room, upstairs at 720 SE Hawthorne Boulevard in Portland's Central Eastside, opened in summer 2025 as the city's dedicated all-ages home for hardcore, punk and DIY shows - a 250-capacity room built by the scene it serves. The founders are the team behind 777 Booking - Chip Sneed, Kieran Harden, Stephen Cameron and Andrew Le - Portland's hardcore promotion crew, who took over the former Analog Cafe and Theater space and rebuilt it with an "ant colony" of scene volunteers, funded by the booking operation and community donations. The mission statement is explicit: a place where the next generation can see and play shows without a 21-plus door policy deciding who belongs. The operating model matches the ethos: the venue supplies the room, a serious sound system, backline and house engineers, and opens its calendar to DIY bookers and independent promoters rather than programming everything in-house. Soft drinks stand in for a bar - Liquid Death is the house pour - and alcohol is neither sold nor allowed. The need it fills is structural: Portland's all-ages infrastructure had been eroding for years as venues closed or went bar-first, and the city's hardcore boom - one of the country's most active scenes - had outgrown basements and rental halls. High Limit Room gives touring packages and local bills a legitimate, permanent all-ages address between the house-show circuit and the Hawthorne Theatre. Practical notes: the room is upstairs with no elevator - accessibility upgrades are on the owners' list - re-entry runs on wristbands, bags may be checked, and street parking surrounds the block between SE 7th and 8th. Look for the marquee; bring earplugs. The timing matters to the story: Portland hardcore entered the 2020s as one of the most productive scenes in the country, with bands breaking nationally out of basements and rented halls, yet the city kept losing the small rooms that sustained them. By giving 777 Booking's shows a permanent home - and opening the calendar to any DIY promoter with a bill - the venue effectively institutionalised the scene's infrastructure without corporatising it, a balance very few American cities have managed at this scale.
