Historic Virginia Key Beach Park

This shoreline opened in 1945 because Black Miamians staged a wade-in and refused to leave the water. Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, at 4020 Virginia Beach Drive on Virginia Key in Biscayne Bay, is an 82-acre beach park, civil-rights landmark and outdoor event ground - once the only beach in segregated Miami-Dade County open to African Americans. The park was born on 1 August 1945, months after protesters challenged whites-only Baker's Haulover; the county designated Virginia Key a "colored only" beach, reachable at first solely by boat. For a generation it became the centre of Black Miami's social world - church baptisms in the surf, dance pavilions, a carousel and miniature train - while hosting figures from the civil-rights era's travelling circuit. Neglect nearly erased it: closed by the city in 1982, the park sat derelict for two decades until community campaigners - led by the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust and champions like Athalie Range and M. Athalie Range's allies - won its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and reopened it in 2008 with the historic carousel and train restored. Its second life includes big music: the park's open acreage and bayfront lawns host festivals and concerts - most famously several editions of the III Points-adjacent and jam-scene events, Rolling Loud's early years, and recurring reggae, EDM and cultural festivals - making it one of Miami's signature outdoor venues, with the skyline across the water as a backdrop. Practical notes: the park opens daily with a modest per-car entry fee, sits off the Rickenbacker Causeway between downtown and Key Biscayne, and its nature trails, picnic shelters and restored rides make it a family destination between event weekends. A planned civil-rights museum will anchor the park's next chapter.
