Two friends spent nine months gutting an auto-parts warehouse because Portland had no room for the electronic music they loved - twenty years later their club is the city's dance-floor institution. Holocene, at 1001 SE Morrison Street in the Buckman neighbourhood of inner-Southeast Portland, opened in June 2003 and remains the city's essential music-and-arts nightclub. Founders Scott McLean and Jarkko Cain built the 5,000-square-foot space themselves in the old Best Auto Parts warehouse: soaring white walls, 25-foot ceilings, spindly bow-trusses and a sunken dance floor, split into two rooms whose dividing wall folds away for big nights. The design - minimal, industrial, hand-built - was inspired by Berlin's techno spaces and stood apart from every rock bar in town. The booking outgrew the founding vision fast: booker Gina Altamura, aboard from 2008, layered vibrant local bands, multimedia art parties, R&B and hip-hop icons and modern indie stars over the house-and-techno foundation. Willamette Week readers named it the city's Best Place to Dance, and the club's twentieth anniversary in 2023 celebrated a booking history running from legendary DJs to genre-blurring newcomers. The room details reward attention: each of the two main rooms carries its own sound system, projection and lights; capacity is 312, keeping even sold-out nights intimate; and the cocktail list - Claire's Knee, Kiss Kiss Bangkok - signals the arty streak that separates Holocene from a pure club. Practical notes: weekend dance parties run from 9 pm with reasonable covers, weeknights mix live bills and events, and the club sits at SE 10th and Morrison amid the Central Eastside's breweries and restaurants, with buses on Belmont-Morrison and easy rideshare. Most nights are 21-plus; check the calendar for all-ages shows.
