They call it the greatest setting in college football, and the claim is hard to argue: the open end of the horseshoe frames Lake Washington and the Cascades, and fans arrive for games by boat. Husky Stadium, at 3800 Montlake Boulevard NE on the University of Washington campus in Seattle, opened on 27 November 1920 and today seats 70,083 - the largest stadium in the Pacific Northwest. Students built it in a real sense: a plaque drive raised the seed money, and the 30,000-seat bowl was finished 12 hours before kickoff of the 1920 Dartmouth game. President Warren G. Harding gave his final public address here in July 1923, six days before his death. Expansions in 1937, 1950 and 1968 grew the bowl; the 1987 north upper deck - which collapsed mid-construction, injuring no one, and was rebuilt in time for the season - took capacity to 72,500. The 2011-13 rebuild was the largest capital project in university history: 280 million dollars demolished and reconstructed nearly everything but the north stand, removed the running track to drop the field and pull seats tight to the sidelines, and added premium boxes and the football operations complex - the Huskies playing 2012 downtown while the work proceeded. The noise is documented legend: the cantilevered steel roofs over both sidelines trap sound so effectively that a 1992 night game against Nebraska registered among the loudest crowd readings ever taken at a college stadium, and opposing quarterbacks have called Montlake the hardest place in the country to hear. The Seahawks used the stadium during their own venue transitions in 1994 and 2000-01. Practical notes: the Link light rail's UW station sits directly across from the stadium, the "sailgating" fleet moors on Union Bay on game days, and the west-end views at sunset justify arriving an hour early regardless of the opponent.
