Hyena's Comedy Night Club - Fort Worth

The founder could not afford to open a club, so he rented a 600-seat downtown venue show by show until the door money added up - three decades later his room is the longest-running comedy club in Fort Worth. Hyena's Comedy Nightclub, at 425 Commerce Street in Sundance Square, has anchored downtown Fort Worth stand-up since December 1994. Randy Butler learned the trade at Laffs Comedy Caffe in Albuquerque in the 1980s, watching Jerry Seinfeld, Dana Carvey and Ellen DeGeneres sell out rooms on their way to the Tonight Show, then moved to Texas and bootstrapped his own club through rented nights at the Caravan of Dreams before Hyena's found its permanent Commerce Street home. The guest book covers comedy's spectrum: Ron White, Tommy Chong, Paul Reiser, Lewis Black, Pauly Shore and Gilbert Gottfried have all headlined, and the club's stock in trade remains the touring professional - killers of the road circuit booked for skill rather than celebrity, with local showcases and open-mic development feeding the Texas talent pool. The room is built for the art form: a non-smoking showroom with modern sound, lighting and high-definition monitors, designed to push the comedian into the crowd so every seat feels front-of-room. A 2016 facade renovation folded the club into the revitalised Sundance Square streetscape, and the brand has since grown into a small empire - Dallas, the Red Room and Albuquerque. Practical notes: shows run Thursday through Saturday with extra weekend late shows, most performances are 18-plus with a full bar, and the Commerce Street address puts the club steps from Sundance Square Plaza's restaurants - book the early show and dinner takes care of itself. The club's deeper legacy is the Texas comedy pipeline it maintains: weekly open mics and local showcase slots have given hundreds of Metroplex comics their first paid work, and the brand's expansion - Dallas around 2010, the intimate Red Room, Albuquerque in 2025, with ambitions for more - runs on talent the Fort Worth room developed. Three decades of continuous operation through comedy's boom-bust cycles is a rarer achievement than any single famous name on the wall.
