Canada's largest mixed-use sports and entertainment district grew up around a hockey rink - and its outdoor spaces have become downtown Edmonton's concert grounds. ICE District, centred at 104 Avenue and 102 Street around Rogers Place arena, programs two major open-air venues: the 50,000-square-foot ICE District Plaza and the Fan Park on the former Baccarat Casino site east of the arena. The district transformed a parking-lot quarter: anchored by Rogers Place, the 2016-opened home of the Edmonton Oilers, the 25-acre development stacked the JW Marriott, Stantec Tower - western Canada's tallest building - and a grid of restaurants and residences around public spaces designed from the start for events. The Fan Park is the workhorse venue: a large fenced, programmable site hosting festivals, concerts and watch parties year-round - Oilers playoff gatherings that spill thousands into the district, winter festivals with portable rinks under the Winter City strategy, and ticketed music events that have grown into full festivals, including Igloofest's Canadian expansion and the Neon Skies festival launched in July 2026 with Kesha and Conan Gray headlining. The Plaza plays the town-square role: set between the arena, hotel and tower, its 50,000 square feet host markets, cultural festivals, Pride events and public gatherings for anywhere from five to five thousand people, with the district's parkades, restaurants and LRT connections wrapped around it - and OEG's planned event-park redesign promises a purpose-built next phase. Practical notes: over 40 bus routes and five LRT stations sit within walking distance, the Central Parkade offers hundreds of heated stalls, and bag limits apply at ticketed Fan Park events; winter events run regardless of cold - dress like a local. The district's event pedigree grew fast under pressure: during the NHL's 2020 pandemic bubble Edmonton hosted both conference playoffs behind Rogers Place's closed doors, and the outdoor spaces have since scaled from watch parties to full ticketed festivals - Igloofest brought Montreal's winter electronic festival west, and the OEG-promoted Neon Skies launch drew international pop headliners in its first year. The planned redesign of the Fan Park into a permanent event park signals the next stage: downtown Edmonton treating outdoor music as core infrastructure rather than a summer sideline.
