Indiana Convention Center

More hotel rooms connect to this building by climate-controlled skywalk than to any other convention centre in America - 4,700 of them, meaning a January convention never requires a coat. The Indiana Convention Center, at 100 South Capitol Avenue in downtown Indianapolis, opened in 1972 and has grown through five expansions into one of the nation's twenty largest convention complexes. The original 26-million-dollar Indiana Convention-Exposition Center opened with 160,000 square feet; the 1984 expansion arrived alongside the 60,500-seat Hoosier Dome next door, and further projects in 1993 and 2000-01 pushed the footprint past 400,000 square feet while the city built its convention-and-sports downtown around it. The 2011 expansion made it a giant: a 275-million-dollar project nearly doubled the building to 566,600 square feet of contiguous exhibit space across 11 halls, 71 meeting rooms and three ballrooms, with an underground connector to Lucas Oil Stadium adding 183,000 more square feet - a combined 749,100 square feet of exhibit space. A sixth expansion, adding a 50,000-square-foot ballroom and the Signia by Hilton tower, pushes rentable space past a million square feet. The calendar explains the investment: Gen Con, the country's biggest tabletop-gaming convention, FDIC International's fire-service congress, national volleyball and cheer championships, and the NFL Scouting Combine's public events all recur annually, alongside conventions that fill downtown - the six-block radius holds over 7,000 hotel rooms and the Circle Centre mall. Practical notes: the centre borders the State Capitol, Union Station and Pan Am Plaza, with Victory Field and Gainbridge Fieldhouse in walking range; event parking spreads across downtown garages, and the skywalk network means most convention visitors genuinely never step outside.
