Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts - Jacoby Symphony Hall

Twelve-inch-thick walls, no curtains, no fly tower, no wings - nothing in this room exists except for the sound. Robert E. Jacoby Symphony Hall, inside the Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts at 300 Water Street on the downtown riverfront, is northeast Florida's purpose-built orchestral hall and the home of the Jacksonville Symphony. The hall was the prize of the 1995-97 rebuild of Jacksonville's 1962 Civic Auditorium: a 35-million-dollar project under the city's River City Renaissance plan gutted the old complex and carved three venues from it, with the former exhibition hall transformed into a dedicated 1,737-seat concert room by KBJ Architects and acoustician Lawrence Kirkegaard. The design follows the European gold standard: a shoebox shape modelled on Vienna's Musikverein, with three seating tiers wrapping the room, massive masonry for acoustic isolation, and the audience folded close around the platform - a pure concert hall in the classical sense, rare in American cities Jacksonville's size. The Bryan Concert Organ, a rebuilt Casavant pipe organ, completes the room. The Jacksonville Symphony and its youth orchestra anchor the calendar with masterworks, pops and education series, while the hall's intimacy makes it a favoured stop for chamber orchestras, recitalists and jazz-at-symphony-scale bookings - the acoustic rewarding exactly the repertoire the neighbouring Moran Theater's scale cannot. Practical notes: the center sits on the St. Johns River beside the Acosta Bridge with garage parking across Water Street, the Skyway monorail's Central station a short walk, and the complex's three venues - Moran, Jacoby and the 609-seat Terry Theater - often run simultaneously, so check which door your ticket wants. Kirkegaard's acoustic prescription shows in details audiences feel but rarely notice: the hall's reverberation is tuned long enough for Romantic repertoire but controlled enough for Classical clarity, the tiered side balconies act as reflecting surfaces that wrap sound around listeners, and the isolation is thorough enough that events in the adjoining Moran Theater - sharing the same building - do not bleed through. The Symphony's Courtney Lewis era has leaned into the room's strengths with recording projects and adventurous programming that trade on an acoustic most regional American orchestras frankly envy.
