Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall
click to manageThe orchestra rehearsed in school gymnasiums while its home hall double-booked around it - so one man built the musicians a palace. The Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, at 1212 Cathedral Street in Baltimore's Mount Vernon cultural district, opened on 16 September 1982 as the purpose-built home of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, with 2,443 seats in a boldly sculptural oval. The problem dated to 1969: conductor Sergiu Comissiona and executive director Joseph Leavitt raised the need for a new hall because scheduling conflicts at the Lyric Opera House had the BSO preparing concerts in cramped backstage corners and school gyms. Joseph Meyerhoff - the Ukrainian-born builder and philanthropist who served as the orchestra's president from 1965 to 1983 - led the funding, joined by the State of Maryland and City of Baltimore; ground broke in November 1978. The architecture is late-career Pietro Belluschi: the modernist master, working with Jung/Brannen Associates, expressed the oval auditorium as a brick cylinder rising from a plaza, with sloping metal roofs over the lobbies and warm wood finishes within - a building of its late-70s moment that has aged into a landmark. RTKL Associates renovated the acoustic systems in the 1990s. The opening night set the tone - Comissiona conducting with Baltimore's own Leon Fleisher at the piano - and the hall has since carried the BSO's Grammy-winning modern era while doubling as the city's premier stage for jazz, gospel, comedy, rock and speaker events, its fan-shaped seating keeping sightlines clean for every format. Practical notes: the Meyerhoff sits within walking distance of the Lyric, the Walters Art Museum and Penn Station, with the Cultural Center light rail stop adjacent; the BSO's season runs September to June with summer programming lighter, and the surrounding Mount Vernon neighbourhood supplies the pre-concert dinner options.
