An entire downtown city block, roofed in translucent plastic pillows and wired for sound, functions as Kansas City's open-air living room. The block was the centrepiece of downtown Kansas City's great revival bet: developer Cordish built the multi-block Power and Light District - named for the Art Deco KCP&L tower - with heavy public investment under mayor Kay Barnes, wrapping a full-concert stage and courtyard with two storeys of bars and restaurants. American Idol filmed here in its 2008 heyday, and six million people now pass through the block yearly. Hot Country Nights is the signature: the Thursday summer series, now past its seventeenth year, brings national country acts - Tyler Hubbard, Billy Currington, The Band Perry, Dylan Scott - to the stage weekly, while the calendar's other tentpoles include the city's biggest Halloween and New Year's Eve parties and watch parties that turned biblical during the Chiefs' Super Bowl runs and the 2026 World Cup buildup. A 10-million-dollar Cordish renovation completed in spring 2025 rebuilt the experience - new outdoor audiovisual displays around a 40-foot LED screen, theatrical lighting, upgraded sound and ceiling heaters - timed to the Big 12 tournament and the World Cup summer, when the district served as the city's de facto fan festival. Practical notes: ticketed concerts run 18-plus on the floor and 21-plus in VIP balconies and bars like PBR Big Sky and Shark Bar; seating is first-come with lawn chairs banned, the canopy keeps rain out but not July heat, and the KC Streetcar's Power and Light stop drops you a block from the stage.
