Kansas Speedway

When the ticket orders came in, they built more grandstand before the first race had even run: demand for Kansas Speedway's 2001 debut was so fierce that capacity grew from 75,000 to 82,000 seats during construction. The 1.5-mile tri-oval at 400 Speedway Boulevard in Kansas City, Kansas, opened on 2 June 2001 and remade the western edge of the metro around it. The track was NASCAR's heartland flag-plant: International Speedway Corporation picked Kansas City in the late 1990s to anchor the sport's push beyond the Southeast, spending 287 million dollars on a 1,200-plus-acre complex with variable 17-to-20-degree banking. Jeff Gordon won the inaugural Cup race on 30 September 2001 - and the next year's too - while IndyCar raced here from 2001 to 2010. The development bet paid exactly as promised: the speedway seeded the Village West district - Kansas' largest tourist draw - with the Legends outlet mall, Sporting KC's stadium and the Hollywood Casino, which opened in 2012 physically overlooking Turn 2, a joint venture between Penn Entertainment and the track. NASCAR itself took full ownership in 2019. The racing evolved with the sport: a 2012 repave added progressive banking that made Kansas one of the circuit's best intermediate tracks, now hosting two Cup weekends a year - the AdventHealth 400 in spring and the playoff Hollywood Casino 400 in fall - plus Xfinity and Truck series races; grandstand capacity was right-sized to 48,000 as NASCAR trimmed inventory league-wide. Practical notes: the complex sits at the I-70/I-435 junction with parking for over 35,000 vehicles free on race days; the infield road course supports track-day and roval events, campgrounds ring the property for the full American race-weekend experience, and the Legends district absorbs the pre- and post-race hours painlessly.
