Portland's hardest-working stage opened on the Fourth of July 1917 and has carried every era of the city's cultural life since: opera, Broadway, ballet, rock tours and presidential speeches, all in one building on Clay Street. The 1967-68 modernisation rebuilt it beyond recognition: the ornate exterior gave way to a clean modern shell, capacity rationalised to just under 3,000 with modern sightlines and stagecraft - a 107-by-41-foot stage, 70-musician pit and dressing space for 250 performers. The renaming came in 2000, honouring Richard B. Keller's 1.5-million-dollar renovation gift; the celebrated Ira Keller Fountain - his father's namesake - cascades directly across the street, framed by the lobby's window walls. The residents define its rhythm: Portland Opera and Oregon Ballet Theatre call the Keller home, and the Broadway in Portland series parks its biggest touring productions here - Hamilton, Wicked and every marquee title - making the hall the state's principal Broadway house, with the Oregon Symphony's pops and headline concerts filling the gaps. Practical notes: the city has studied replacing or rebuilding the ageing hall for years - a decision on the Keller's long-term future remains live - but the calendar runs full meanwhile; MAX and streetcar lines stop within three blocks, and the Keller Fountain park is the correct pre-show gathering spot on any dry evening.
