Kentucky Expo Center

Muhammad Ali won his first professional fight here; Elvis, the Rolling Stones and Elton John played here; and every August some 600,000 Kentuckians arrive for fried chicken, bourbon and livestock. The Kentucky Exposition Center, at 937 Phillips Lane beside Louisville's airport, is the sixth-largest facility of its kind in the United States - 1.3 million square feet of indoor space on over 520 acres. The project took six years and a war to finish: the State Fair Board bought 396 acres in 1950 for 522,580 dollars, but Korean War material shortages and political infighting stretched construction to 1956 and 12 million dollars. It opened as the largest multi-purpose facility of its era, anchored by an arena named through a statewide contest - DuPont Manual student Charlotte Owens' winning entry: Freedom Hall. Freedom Hall became Kentucky basketball's cathedral: home of University of Louisville men's basketball for 54 years, host of six NCAA Final Fours, and - sized originally for the 300-foot show ring of the World's Championship Horse Show - a concert barn for Elvis, Kiss, Johnny Cash, the Jackson 5 and the Motown revues; expansions took it to 19,500 seats by 1984. The complex around it kept growing - East and West wings, the South Wings in 1990, the modern North Wing in 2007 with a skywalk, plus the 6,600-seat Broadbent Arena - and hosts the Kentucky State Fair, the National Farm Machinery Show and its famous tractor pull, and the North American International Livestock Exposition, the world's largest purebred livestock show. A 180-million-dollar renovation program is now modernising the campus. Practical notes: the centre sits at the I-65/I-264 junction with acres of on-site parking; 1,000 permanent horse stalls signal how seriously the equestrian calendar is taken, and fair-week traffic rewards arriving before mid-morning - or riding the event shuttles from the airport hotels.
