It is one of college sport's rare single-sport arenas: a Division I venue built, renovated and named for volleyball alone. L&N Federal Credit Union Arena, at the corner of Floyd Street and Brandeis Avenue on the University of Louisville campus, is the 1,100-seat home of the Cardinals' women's volleyball program - one of the most consistently dangerous teams in the ACC. The venue opened in 1991 as Cardinal Arena, attached to the northeast corner of the Swain Student Activities Center; the program's first win in the building came on 31 August 1991 against Morehead State, and by the 2017 season the Cardinals had compiled an 87 percent winning percentage on the floor - one of the more daunting home-court records in the sport. The 2017 renovation rebuilt the experience around that dominance: added end-zone seating created a mezzanine, a new Teraflex competition floor went down, and the lobby, locker rooms, training room, players' lounge and common areas were refurbished, with a full-service concession counter - food, soft drinks and beer - installed just inside the revamped entrance. The name arrived on 18 April 2019, when L&N Federal Credit Union - a Louisville cooperative with deep local roots - committed 2 million dollars to Cardinal athletics. The relationship carries a historical rhyme: the credit union began in 1954 serving employees of the L&N Railroad, whose South Louisville Shops occupied for ninety years the exact ground where the football stadium now stands a block away. The arena's intimacy is its weapon: fans sit directly over the court, the sound has nowhere to go, and coach Dani Busboom Kelly's Final Four-calibre teams have used the building to break in freshmen against top-25 non-conference schedules before the ACC grind; for bigger draws the program has periodically moved matches downtown to the KFC Yum! Center, where Louisville has hosted NCAA tournament rounds. Practical notes: the arena shares parking with the Swain Student Activities Center off Floyd Street, two blocks north of the football stadium; admission prices stay family-friendly, most matches run under two hours, and the mezzanine end seats put you at eye level with the servers - the best view in the building.
