L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium

The stadium stands on the exact site where its sponsor was born: L&N Federal Credit Union started in 1954 serving railroad workers at the L&N Railroad's South Louisville Shops - and seven decades later put its name on the 60,800-seat football cathedral built over those same rail yards. L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium, at 2800 South Floyd Street, is the home of University of Louisville football. The stadium opened on 5 September 1998 after a decade of planning, a 135-million-dollar build that gave the Cardinals the nation's only all-chairback on-campus stadium at its 42,000-seat original size, complete with private suites and a club spanning the length of the field. It carried the Papa John's name through 2018, became simply Cardinal Stadium, then took the L&N name on 30 January 2023 under a 20-year, 41-million-dollar deal running to 2042. Two expansions built it out: the 75-million-dollar 2010 project double-decked the east side with the UPS Flight Deck, 33 suites and 2,000 loge seats, lifting capacity to 55,000; the 63.3-million-dollar 2019 north-end project closed the horseshoe with 6,000 more seats - 800 club seats, 68 loge boxes, 12 field-level suites and the Pepsi Club - alongside a major upgrade to the Howard Schnellenberger Football Complex. The building has range beyond football: concerts and festivals have filled the bowl - the record sporting crowd of 59,225 watched Louisville-Kentucky in November 2023 - and the US Women's World Cup champions have played here; twin 40-by-80-foot LED boards in the north end and a 24-by-92-foot south board handle the show. The tailgating geography is its own tradition: lots sprawl between the stadium, the Kentucky Exposition Center and the fairgrounds, with the Cardinal Bird flag caravan rolling down Floyd Street; the program's rise through Lamar Jackson's 2016 Heisman season made Card March and the pregame rituals appointment viewing. Practical notes: the stadium sits at Floyd Street and Central Avenue hard against I-65, sharing the corridor with the Expo Center - check event overlap before driving; gates favour mobile tickets, clear-bag rules apply, and the Angel's Envy Bourbon Club remains the premium perch, a field-length room stocked with Louisville's signature spirit.
