Legends Field

The team took the name of the greatest franchise in Negro Leagues history - and shares its gate money with the museum that keeps that history alive. Legends Field, at 1800 Village West Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas, is the home of the Kansas City Monarchs of the American Association, a 6,537-seat ballpark that has also hosted Major League Soccer and NWSL football. The park opened on 6 June 2003 as CommunityAmerica Ballpark, a 14-million-dollar anchor for the Village West development that would grow into Kansas's biggest tourist district - the Kansas Speedway, Children's Mercy Park and the Legends Outlets shopping sprawl all sit within walking distance. The T-Bones, relocated from Duluth, filled it for eighteen seasons. The 2021 rebrand made it meaningful: new owner Mark Brandmeyer partnered with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to rename the team the Monarchs - honouring the club of Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige, Buck O'Neil and Ernie Banks, eleven-time pennant winners and the longest-tenured team in Negro Leagues history - with a portion of sales flowing back to the museum. The park's quirks earn affection: an 18-foot left-field wall nicknamed the Little Green Monster stands 300 feet away, the bullpens carve odd angles into center field, and a 25-foot concourse rings the entire field. Soccer wrote its own chapter: the Kansas City Wizards played here from 2008 - drawing a record 10,385 - and the NWSL's Kansas City Current debuted here in 2021. Concerts and community events fill the summer gaps - the park has advertised capacity up to 20,000 for festival configurations - while high school baseball's Butch Foster Memorial Classic and league all-star games keep the diamond busy beyond the Monarchs' schedule. Practical notes: the park sits off I-70 at the Village West exits with free parking lots; promotional nights drive the attendance, the berm and picnic areas suit families, and pairing a day game with the Legends Outlets or an evening Sporting KC match across the parking lots is the local double-header.
