The origin is delightfully scandalous: dance instructor Montrose Ringler built the third-floor hall in an era when Portlanders could still be arrested for dancing the tango, and the Police Bureau's Women's Protective Division watched his possibly risque dances closely; the mechanical "elastic" floor - a 1905 Charles Hunt patent of rockers and ball bearings under maple - was unique on the Pacific Coast. The century covered every craze: jazz dances scandalised the 1920s authorities until Ringler lost the hall, "Dad" Watson's Depression-era old-time revivals lifted spirits, segregation-era African-American formal dances made rare and special nights, and the psychedelic 1960s brought the counterculture until the city shut the room down in June 1968 - after which it sat largely dormant for a quarter century. The rescue was McMenamins' signature move: the Portland brewpub empire bought the National Register-listed building in 1994, restored the floating floor to working order, and reopened in 1997 with Ringlers pub at street level and the 1,500-capacity ballroom upstairs under its murals, wall sconces and giant arched windows. The modern calendar spans everything: rock, hip-hop, country and big-band swing tours share the floor with MusicfestNW dates and the National Beard and Mustache Championships, while Lola's Room - the smaller second-floor sister hall - runs its own club nights and 80s dance parties.
