MGM Grand Garden Arena

Barbra Streisand opened it on New Year's Eve 1993 for 13.5 million dollars at the box office - then boxing moved in and made it the most important fight venue on earth. The MGM Grand Garden Arena, inside the MGM Grand at 3799 South Las Vegas Boulevard, seats up to 17,000 and has staged more than 100 championship boxing cards. The arena opened with the world's largest hotel: the emerald-green MGM Grand debuted in December 1993 with 5,000-plus rooms, and Ellerbe Becket's 28.4-million-dollar arena followed within two weeks - Streisand's comeback concert christening it before Luther Vandross and Janet Jackson filled the opening months. The boxing history is unmatched: from Frankie Randall's upset of Julio Cesar Chavez in January 1994 through George Foreman's one-punch resurrection against Michael Moorer, both Tyson-Holyfield fights - the second infamous for the bite - Mayweather-Pacquiao's record-shattering 2015 night and the Canelo era, the Garden holds every major box-office and pay-per-view record in the sport. The history carries darkness too: after the Bruce Seldon-Tyson card of 7 September 1996, Tupac Shakur left the arena and was fatally shot on Las Vegas Boulevard - a night permanently woven into hip-hop history. The wider calendar stays elite: UFC title cards, the Billboard Music Awards' long residency, the Academy of Country Music Awards, marquee concert stands and Grand Slam of Curling-scale one-offs keep the room busy even after T-Mobile Arena took some tentpoles - the Garden remaining the Strip's definitive mid-arena. Practical notes: the Las Vegas Monorail's MGM Grand station and the Strip pedestrian bridges feed the arena through the casino floor - allow twenty minutes to cross the property; fight nights sell the floor to high rollers so the 100-level corners are the realistic buy, and the walk out through the lion-branded casino after a big card is a Vegas experience in itself.
