A Baptist church became a recording studio so intimate that leaving mid-set meant catching the performer's disapproving eye - 85 people, entrance through the restaurant next door, past an Airstream trailer. Mississippi Studios, at 3939 North Mississippi Avenue in Portland's Boise neighbourhood, opened in 2003 and was rebuilt into one of the city's most respected venues in 2009. The founder is a working musician: Jim Brunberg opened the studio on a then-empty street - tumbleweeds, by his account - and knew by the end of the first year that the dollhouse-sized ground-floor music room needed to grow; the 2009 rebuild dismantled the church structure entirely, with local musicians contributing labour. The rebuild kept the bones: raw wooden beams from the original building sprout through the new room, reclaimed joists offset the walls to control reverberation, and a wrap-around balcony seats patrons in the church's original wooden chairs - capacity now roughly 375 with the floor standing. The acoustics are the reputation: custom non-parallel walls and slanted panels were designed for listening rather than volume, and the room's roughly 500 shows a year split evenly between Portland acts and touring names - the owners' portfolio grew to include Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall. The attached Bar Bar completes the block: the burger-and-beer bar next door runs 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily with a patio, feeding the venue crowd before and after shows on a Mississippi Avenue strip that has become one of North Portland's densest nightlife runs. Practical notes: the number 4 bus runs Mississippi Avenue and street parking thins on weekends; the balcony pews are the seated refuge but fill first, most shows are 21-plus with select all-ages dates, and a garage door between bar and showroom keeps the drinkers' roar out of the quiet songs.
