Mortgage Matchup Center

Seven names in 33 years - America West, US Airways, Talking Stick Resort, Phoenix Suns Arena, Footprint Center, PHX Arena and now Mortgage Matchup Center - but the address has never changed. The downtown Phoenix arena at 201 East Jefferson Street opened on 6 June 1992 and has housed the Suns ever since. The building was a city bet: the 89-million-dollar arena replaced the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum as the Suns' home, arriving in time for the Charles Barkley era and the 1993 NBA Finals run that seared the room into franchise lore. The tenants span leagues: the Suns share the floor with the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury - three-time champions and one of the league's foundational franchises - with the arena's resume including NBA Finals series in 1993 and 2021, WNBA Finals, and a rotation of more than 100 sporting and entertainment events a year. The latest name is a family affair: Suns and Mercury owner Mat Ishbia is also chief executive of United Wholesale Mortgage, whose consumer brand Mortgage Matchup took the naming rights in October 2025 on a 10-year deal worth roughly 115 million dollars - among the largest in the NBA and WNBA. The capacity flexes by configuration: 17,071 for basketball, around 16,000 to 17,000 for in-the-round concerts, 12,565 end-stage and a 4,379-seat theatre setup - with recent ownership adding a two-dollar value menu, premium clubs and the first members-only dining club inside a US sports venue. Practical notes: Valley Metro Rail's 3rd Street/Jefferson stop lands at the door and the arena anchors the same blocks as Chase Field - big-event nights double the crowds; the 2026 NCAA Women's Final Four and 2027 NBA All-Star Game are inbound, and the value menu genuinely undercuts every comparable arena concession in the league. The nicknames and side-tenants fill out the ledger: locals long called the building the Purple Palace, the NHL's Coyotes played their first seven Phoenix seasons here from 1996, the Arena Football Rattlers made it The Snake Pit for three decades and won ArenaBowl XI on its floor in 1997 - with renovations in 2003 and 2020 totalling some 67 million dollars keeping the 1992 shell current.
