Muriel Kauffman Theatre at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

Placido Domingo sang the opening gala on 16 September 2011, inaugurating a hall whose stainless-steel north facade rises from the ground like a wave. The Muriel Kauffman Theatre is the larger of two venues inside the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts at 1601 Broadway Boulevard in downtown Kansas City. The architect was Moshe Safdie: his 285,000-square-foot double-shell design places the 1,800-seat theatre and the 1,600-seat Helzberg Hall as distinct structures under one glass roof, the Brandmeyer Great Hall between them offering sweeping views south over the city - a 413-million-dollar project funded largely by the Kauffman family. The theatre is built like a European opera house: a horseshoe seating configuration wraps the audience close to a 5,000-square-foot stage, with an orchestra pit for up to 96 musicians, a 74-foot fly tower and a proscenium whose width adjusts from 40 to 50 feet - flexibility engineered for both ballet and grand opera. The residents define the calendar: the Kansas City Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City both perform home seasons here, with touring Broadway, dance companies and headline entertainers filling the remaining weeks - Nagata Acoustics tuning the room for unamplified voice. The building bridges three neighbourhoods: the center stands between downtown's core, the Crossroads Arts District and the Power and Light District, with five acres of surrounding green space used for outdoor performances and public gatherings. Practical notes: the KC Streetcar's Kauffman Center stop lands at the door and the center's underground garage connects directly inside; the horseshoe boxes hold the room's best acoustics-to-price ratio, matinee availability runs better than weekend evenings, and pairing a show with the Crossroads' First Friday art walk is the local move.
