Murray Hill Theatre - Jacksonville

It was an industrial goth club called The Dungeon before it became the nation's best-known Christian rock venue - few buildings have swung harder between identities. The Murray Hill Theatre, at 932 Edgewood Avenue South in Jacksonville's Murray Hill neighbourhood, opened on 8 January 1949 as a movie house. The cinema years were classic neighbourhood Americana: architect William Marshall designed the theatre for the Avenue of Progress shopping strip, and Mayor Haydon Burns attended an opening gala where guests paid fifty cents to watch John Wayne and Montgomery Clift in Red River; the movie house ran until September 1994. The 1995 conversion was a rescue mission: Tony Nasrallah bought the building - by then The Dungeon - and turned it into an alcohol-free, drug-free Christian music venue, explicitly pitching it as both a safe alternative to the club scene and a spark for a declining neighbourhood's revival. The venue earned national standing: nearly 2,000 concerts have passed through, with Switchfoot, Jars of Clay, P.O.D., Family Force 5 and The Almost on the ledger - the 598-capacity room operated by the independent nonprofit Murray Hill Ministries, unaffiliated with any church or denomination. The longevity is the claim: the theatre bills itself as the longest-running live music venue and nightclub in Jacksonville, welcoming audiences of any faith perspective while using live music as its outreach - a formula that has outlasted most of the secular rooms it once offered an alternative to. Practical notes: the theatre anchors the Edgewood Avenue strip whose coffee shops and pizza joints - Vagabond Coffee took over the old theatre cafe - handle pre-show; all shows are all-ages and alcohol-free by mission, tickets run cheap, and the marquee's restored neon is one of the neighbourhood's photo landmarks.
