Music Hall at Municipal Auditorium - Kansas City

The Art Deco lighting fixtures in this hall were so admired that they inspired the Sky Stations sculptures atop Bartle Hall's pylons decades later. The Music Hall, inside Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium at 301 West 13th Street, opened on 14 June 1936 and remains one of the country's finest streamline moderne theatres. The building was a Depression-era statement: the limestone, concrete and steel Municipal Auditorium cost 6.5 million dollars - over a million of it a federal Public Works Administration grant - with the architectural firms Gentry, Voskamp and Neville and Hoit, Price and Barnes producing an Art Deco landmark that also contains a 10,700-seat arena, an exhibition hall and the octagonal Little Theatre. The theatre itself seats 2,363: 1,185 in the orchestra, 260 in loge and boxes and 918 in the balcony, behind a 3,600-square-foot foyer and grand staircase - a self-contained venue with its own lighted marquee, box office and coat check inside the larger complex. The resume spans the performing arts: the Kansas City Philharmonic called the hall home for decades, and touring Broadway - Wicked, The Lion King, Hamilton, The Book of Mormon - visiting symphonies, opera and ballet companies still anchor the calendar alongside graduations and civic events. One relic sets it apart: the hall houses the 1927 Robert-Morton theatre pipe organ originally installed in the Midland Theatre, owned and maintained by the Kansas City Theatre Pipe Organ organization - a working survivor of the silent-film era. Practical notes: the auditorium connects to the downtown hotel walkway system and underground garage, with the KC Streetcar's Power and Light stop nearby; the balcony's 918 seats hold the value tickets, the loge boxes split the difference on price and sightline, and Broadway runs sell on season subscriptions first - single tickets open later.
