New Orleans Jazz Market

The brief to the acousticians was poetry: build a room that sounds as warm as Louis Armstrong's horn. The New Orleans Jazz Market, at 1436 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in Central City, opened with an April 2015 ribbon-cutting as the first performance hall built for a standing jazz orchestra in the music's birthplace. The building is adaptive reuse: a long-vacant former Gators department store - on the site of the historic Dryades Market, dating to 1849 - was converted into a 350-to-360-seat auditorium wrapped in acoustically tuned wooden planks, with a partial wrap-around balcony and retractable stadium seating. The resident ensemble is the reason it exists: the Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, founded by trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, made the Jazz Market its permanent headquarters - though Mayfield's tenure ended in scandal over misdirected library foundation funds, a chapter that shadowed but did not close the institution. The community mission runs through the lobby: the Bolden Bar hosts free and low-cost live jazz most weekends in the airy front lounge, alongside a digital jazz archive, classrooms, and neighbourhood programming from homework help to health outreach - the building conceived as Central City infrastructure, not just a concert hall. The location is the point: Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard - the former Dryades Street - was once the commercial spine of Black New Orleans and home to many of the city's jazz greats; the Jazz Market anchors the corridor's revival at its intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Practical notes: the hall sits a short ride from the St. Charles streetcar; NOJO season concerts sell reserved seating while Bolden Bar sets are walk-in, the room's acoustics reward unamplified brass like few venues anywhere, and pairing a show with the corridor's restaurant row keeps the evening in the neighbourhood.
