Newfields

A 152-acre campus where an encyclopedic art museum shares grounds with a 100-acre sculpture park, a 1913 pharmaceutical fortune's mansion and 1.5 million holiday lights. Newfields, at 4000 North Michigan Road in Indianapolis, is the umbrella name adopted in 2017 for the Indianapolis Museum of Art and its estate. The institution is among America's oldest: founded as the Art Association of Indianapolis in the early 1880s, the museum grew into a collection of more than 150,000 works spanning American, European, African, Asian and contemporary art - one of the country's largest general art museums. The grounds are half the visit: the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park - 100 Acres - wraps trails and large-scale outdoor commissions around a 35-acre lake, free from dawn to dusk, while The Garden preserves the formal Oldfields landscape around Lilly House, the 22-room country estate of Josiah K. Lilly Jr. The performance calendar runs through The Tobias Theater: the 530-seat hall - voted the city's best listening and screening room - hosts touring singer-songwriters, comedy and live podcasts, with Suzanne Vega and The Secret Sisters among recent names, while the park stages the Summer Nights outdoor film series. The festivals became the signature: Winterlights strings 1.5 million bulbs across The Garden from November to January and sells out weeks ahead, with Harvest Nights running the October equivalent - crowd-pleasing programming that drew both attendance and criticism from art-world purists. Practical notes: the campus sits twenty minutes north of downtown with free parking; 100 Acres uses its own signed entrance off Michigan Road and costs nothing, museum admission covers Lilly House and The Garden, Thursday-to-Saturday evening hours extend gallery time, and festival tickets are separate from - and scarcer than - general admission.
