The June Swaner Gates Concert Hall anchors the Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at 2344 East Iliff Avenue, on the University of Denver campus. The opening was an event: the 70-million-dollar Newman Center debuted on 18 April 2003 with a sold-out gala featuring mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, the Denver Post calling the building a gem that would attract talent that simply never came here before. The hall is built like a European opera house: 971 seats in tiered horseshoe formation - 849 with the orchestra pit open - behind hand-applied plaster walls shaped by acousticians Kirkegaard Associates, with winch-raised acoustic banners tuning the reverberation to each event and a Wenger shell for full orchestra. The programming punches above campus scale: the Newman Center Presents series has brought Wynton Marsalis with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, Pat Metheny, Paul Taylor Dance Company and Dance Theatre of Harlem - roughly 500 presentations and 130,000 visitors a year across the center's three venues. The building serves the university first: DU's Lamont School of Music delivers much of the calendar through student and faculty performances, with the 222-seat Hamilton recital hall and the black-box Byron Theatre completing the complex.
