Ogden Theatre

The number of women's bathrooms decided the venue's capacity - the owner converted his own office into one to satisfy the building code and unlock 600 more tickets a night. The Ogden Theatre at 935 East Colfax Avenue in Denver's Capitol Hill opened on 6 September 1917 and is now one of the city's essential rock rooms. The first act lasted seven decades: designed by Harry W. J. Edbrooke, the Ogden ran as a neighbourhood movie house from its opening screening of Douglas Fairbanks in Wild and Woolly, passing through the Fox and Mann circuits before ending its film years as a revival house running The Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday until closure in 1990. The rescue came in 1993: promoter Doug Kauffman bought the dormant building and converted it for 550,000 dollars - including a 200,000-dollar small-business loan from the mayor's economic development office - reopening it as a concert hall that September. A 2006 renovation grew the room from 1,003 to 1,600 capacity, adding the wraparound balcony and refining the tiered floors; the building joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 and AEG has operated it since 2006. The Ogden's role in Denver's ecosystem is structural: roughly 150 concerts a year fill the rung between the city's sub-1,000 clubs and the big rooms en route to Red Rocks, making it the proving ground where touring acts graduate. Practical notes: the tiered floor means short fans can hold the rails at the back of each level and still see, Colfax buses run all night, and parking is street-scarce - the neighbouring lots fill an hour before doors on sold-out nights. The 1970s remodel gave the building its current face: a new flat marquee, rebuilt lobby and auditorium, loge seating in the balcony and anamorphic projection - the layered renovations mean today's concertgoers stand in a room carrying five distinct architectural eras at once.
