Old Rock House

The name honours a building that no longer exists: an 1818 limestone riverfront warehouse where steamboat pilots drank and Mark Twain's cousin held the deed, dismantled in 1959 to clear ground for the Gateway Arch. Old Rock House, at 1200 South 7th Street in St. Louis, carries the ghost's name into the live-music present. The original's legend earned the tribute: known from Minneapolis to New Orleans as one of the liveliest spots on the river, it hosted a Depression-era nightclub whose resident singer Rock House Annie drew W. C. Handy in a chauffeured limousine, and local lore holds Franklin Roosevelt himself ordered the building spared - for a time. The modern venue is a restored turn-of-the-century redbrick between Soulard and Busch Stadium: roughly 6,000 to 7,000 square feet on three levels, vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, string lighting and a view of the Arch from the block. The format is intimate by intent: around 500 capacity, general-admission standing on the main floor with first-come seating and couches on the balcony level overlooking a 22-foot stage, backed by a full production-grade sound, light and video system. The ownership matters locally: Old Rock House remains an independent, locally owned operation in a touring industry consolidated around national promoters, mixing club tours, regional acts, and private events, with an outdoor pavilion extending the calendar. Practical notes: most shows run doors at 7 and music at 8, the balcony rail is the seated sweet spot and goes early, and Busch Stadium a block north means baseball nights transform parking - check the Cardinals schedule before driving. The 1959 dismantling was itself a preservation compromise: the 1818 warehouse had survived a 1940 Works Progress Administration plan to convert it into a fur-trade museum and decades of colourful tenancy before the Arch grounds clearance finally took it - its stones catalogued, its name waiting for this building.
