The Oregon Convention Center at 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Portland's Lloyd District opened in 1990 as the largest convention facility in Oregon. The design came from Portland's own Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects: an 85-million-dollar precast concrete and brick building whose bimodal plan answered an oblong, warped site - two 31-foot lobbies feeding a ballroom half a level up and exhibition halls half a level down. The 2003 expansion doubled it: Hoffman Construction - which built the original - added 407,500 square feet over a former parking lot, replicating the original detailing so seamlessly the two halves read as one building, with 800 parking stalls buried beneath and no booked event disrupted during construction. The totals now run to nearly one million square feet: 255,000 square feet of exhibit space including a 105,000-square-foot column-free hall under 240-foot clear-span trusses, Portland's largest ballroom at around 35,000 square feet, and dozens of meeting rooms. The building carries civic rituals: the spires are illuminated upward each September 11 in memorial, and the pendulum swings through the lobby year-round - a piece of physics theatre for convention crowds between sessions. Practical notes: the MAX light rail stops at the building's door and the Willamette River bridges put downtown minutes away; the center is owned by Metro, the regional government, and anchors the east-side event calendar from consumer shows to national conventions.
