Orpheum Theater

The floor itself moves: hydraulic lifts tilt the orchestra level from raked concert seating to a flat ballroom, so the same room hosts the Louisiana Philharmonic one night and a standing rock crowd the next. The Orpheum Theater at 129 Roosevelt Way in downtown New Orleans reopened in 2015 after a decade dark. The building is a Beaux Arts vertical hall from vaudeville's golden age: designed by G. Albert Lansburgh - architect of the Los Angeles Orpheum and Martin Beck Theatre - built from 1918 and opened on 7 February 1921, engineered for perfect sightlines and unamplified acoustics across two stacked balconies. The theatre survived two death sentences: scheduled for demolition in 1979 before the city council intervened, then gutted by Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters in 2005, which drowned the basement and lower seating and left the building shuttered for nearly ten years while owners came and went. The rescue came in February 2014: Dr. Eric George and Tipitina's Foundation founder Roland von Kurnatowski bought the wreck for 1.5 million dollars and spent 13 million restoring it under federal historic-preservation guidelines, reopening in 2015 with the hydraulic floor, expanded marble lobby and new bars. The programming spans the city's range: the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra is resident again, Grammy-winning tourers and Jazz Fest late-night shows fill the calendar, and the basement gained the Double Dealer speakeasy in January 2020. Practical notes: capacity runs 1,470 fully seated or about 2,000 with a standing floor, the Roosevelt Hotel and Canal Street sit around the corner, and the Unipark garage next door handles parking - though Jazz Fest nights demand walking shoes and patience. The building's bones helped it survive: the poured-concrete structure - an early example of the technique in a New Orleans theatre - withstood both the demolition era and Katrina's flooding better than plaster-and-lath contemporaries, leaving restorers a sound shell to work from.
