The ceiling is a domed desert sky that fades from golden sunset to starlit night, with projected clouds drifting across it - 1929 special effects that still run today. The Orpheum Theatre at 203 West Adams Street in downtown Phoenix opened on 5 January 1929 as the grandest room between Los Angeles and Denver. The scale was the point: architects Lescher and Mahoney gave the 750,000-dollar atmospheric theatre 1,800 seats, early air conditioning and a 101-foot-wide stage - the only one in the region able to take the weekly-changing travelling vaudeville shows of the Orpheum circuit. The decline traced downtown's: renamed the Paramount in 1950, later a Spanish-language film house called the Palace West, the building was headed for a parking lot by 1983 until Mayor Terry Goddard's administration bought the whole block in 1984 for the new city hall and put the theatre on the National Register the following year. The restoration became a civic project: voters approved 7 million dollars and the Orpheum Theatre Foundation raised the rest of the 14-million-dollar, 12-year effort by Conrad Schmitt Studios; Carol Channing reopened the house in January 1997 with Hello, Dolly! and thanked the audience for not turning it into a parking lot. The modern room keeps evolving: a recent 5-million-dollar round of upgrades added a 60,000-lumen projector and one of Arizona's largest screens, LED lighting and re-spaced seating that lifted capacity to 1,410. Practical notes: the theatre sits beside Phoenix City Hall with the Valley Metro rail blocks away, the atmospheric ceiling rewards balcony seats where the horizon murals read best, and the building hosts Broadway tours, concerts, opera and film alike. The building's survival makes it singular: it is the last remaining theatre palace in Phoenix from the movie-palace era, and the restoration's scagliola, gold leaf and mural work by Conrad Schmitt Studios is regularly cited among the most complete atmospheric-theatre restorations in the country.
