The theatre was wired for sound in 1915 - more than a decade before talkies existed - making it likely the first American movie house acoustically designed for pictures that could speak. The Parkway Theatre at 5 West North Avenue in Baltimore's Station North district opened on 23 October 1915 and reopened on 3 May 2017 as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway Film Center. The original was Baltimore-born architect Oliver Birkhead Wight's Italian Renaissance jewel for the Northern Amusement Company, closely modeled on London's West End Theatre with an egg-shaped auditorium that perfected sightlines and acoustics; opening night screened Zaza with a full orchestra. The middle decades were eclectic: a nightly live radio program called Nocturne broadcast from the house from 1937 to 1957 with Wurlitzer organ and poetry readings, and from 1956 the renamed 5 West ran art-house and foreign films before the building closed in 1978 and sat dark for nearly forty years. The rebirth came through cinema: the Maryland Film Festival acquired the wreck and adjacent buildings, and architects Ziger/Snead deliberately restored it as a palimpsest - preserving a century of scars rather than faking 1915 - creating a 400-seat main hall plus two 85-seat screening rooms, a cafe and bar. The programming is year-round film culture: the five-day Maryland Film Festival anchors the calendar, with repertory, documentary and independent programming shared with the film schools of Johns Hopkins and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Practical notes: the corner of North Avenue and Charles Street sits at the heart of the Station North Arts District, a short hop from Penn Station; the main hall's balcony survives in restored-ruin state, and the building is a designated Baltimore City landmark. The two upstairs screening rooms are engineering quietly done well: stacked directly above busy North Avenue, both are soundproofed to near-silence - a necessity the architects treated as a design feature.
