Pawn Shop Live (Formerly known as Union Hall)

The name came back from the dead: the original Pawn Shop on Whyte Avenue was the room where a generation of Edmonton bands played their first shows before economics closed it in 2015. Pawn Shop Live, at 6240 99 Street NW - the building that spent 22 years as Union Hall - opened under its revived name on 16 January 2026. The backstory is a two-venue merger: when the Whyte Avenue Pawn Shop closed, much of its staff migrated to Union Hall, the 20,000-square-foot south-side event hall; a decade later, owner Brandon Kwak and partners rebranded Union Hall itself after an outpouring of support from local bands, sending the old name off with a free Borgeous show on 2 January 2026. The building is the asset: two levels with wraparound balconies and strong sightlines, reconfigurable from an intimate 300-capacity club night up to concerts around 1,200 - a flexibility the operators argue no other Edmonton room matches at sustainable year-round economics. The mission is the mid-market: Edmonton has arenas above and small bars below, but rooms in the 300-1,200 band - the level where touring acts pass through every year or two on the way up or down - are scarce, and the venue positions itself squarely in that gap. The lineage carries obligations: the original Pawn Shop was a launching pad for local rock, punk and metal, and the revived venue leans into that history with heavy local programming between touring bookings, plus the DJ and electronic nights inherited from the Union Hall years. Practical notes: the venue sits just off Whitemud Drive and Calgary Trail on the city's south side with its own parking lot - a car-first location rather than a walkable strip - and ticketing runs through Live Nation for most touring shows. The operators' pitch to touring agents is configuration depth: the room can run full, three-quarter or club setups without feeling empty, letting the same building host a breaking local act on Thursday and a national headliner on Saturday.
