Peck Pavilion at Marcus Center for the Performing Arts

The stage sits directly on the Milwaukee River, with the downtown skyline as the backdrop and a space-frame roof floating over the seats. The Peck Pavilion, the outdoor amphitheater of the Marcus Performing Arts Center at 929 North Water Street in Milwaukee, opened in 1982 as the city's only mid-tier outdoor stage. The pavilion was a gift: the Peck family funded the Miller Meier-designed addition to the performing arts complex that Chicago architect Harry Weese had opened in 1969 - the Brutalist landmark renamed in 1996 for Ben and Ceil Marcus after their 25-million-dollar donation. The signature era was Rainbow Summer: for more than 20 years the free outdoor concert series filled the riverside seats until it ended in 2003, and after several dark seasons the pavilion received a full overhaul - roof replacement, frame re-coating and refurbished wood ceiling - completed in the early 2010s. The setup today is compact and covered: 396 seats including six wheelchair positions under the space-frame canopy, a 42-by-32-foot stage, two dressing rooms, a built-in light grid and a 20-by-10-foot LED video wall that lets overflow crowds watch from the surrounding lawn. The programming runs the summer calendar: concerts, film screenings, dance companies and spoken-word events, many free, alongside rentals - the riverside setting doing much of the atmospheric work. Practical notes: the pavilion shares the Marcus Center block with Uihlein Hall and the riverwalk, a short walk from the Water Street bar district and City Hall; summer evenings off the river run cooler than the city behind it, and the covered seats sell out fastest when weather threatens. The grounds carry their own history: the plaza's grove of chestnut trees, planted to a design by landscape architect Daniel Kiley in the late 1960s, became the centre of a preservation fight when the Marcus Center received city historic designation in 2019.
