Peter Barton Stadium

When it opened it was the only stadium in America built solely for lacrosse. Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, on the University of Denver campus beside the Ritchie Center, was formally dedicated on 30 April 2005 with an overtime win over Air Force - and the program it houses went on to win a national championship a decade later. The name honours a believer: Peter Barton, founding president of Liberty Media and an adjunct professor at DU's business school, coached his children in lacrosse and shared chancellor Dan Ritchie's dream of a dedicated facility; after his death from cancer in 2002, his widow Laura funded most of the 5.9-million-dollar build. The design is compact quality: a 350-foot limestone-faced grandstand with 12 tiers of precast concrete seating for about 2,000, locker rooms for the men's and women's programs beneath, a two-direction press box shared with the adjacent soccer field, and the Gold Club pavilion added in 2006. The results justified it: Denver's teams have gone a combined 267-52 at home across the stadium's first 20 seasons, with the men winning the 2015 NCAA title under Bill Tierney - the first for any program west of the Appalachians - and 62 sellouts including at least one every season since 2011. The next chapter is underway: the donor-funded Barton 2027 renovation, launched in 2025 with 3 million dollars in initial gifts, brings a new Daktronics video board with seven times the digital space, upgraded team areas, press facilities and concourses. Practical notes: the stadium hosts BIG EAST tournaments and NCAA postseason rounds regularly; the north-facing stands keep spring sun out of spectators' eyes, the light-rail at University Station serves campus, and Rocky Mountain evening games run cold well into May. The limestone facing nearly broke the schedule: the quarry needed six months of lead time inside a seven-month construction window, forcing the builder to sequence stone delivery around the 2005 season opener.
