The name upgrade was astronomical pedantry done affectionately: the North Star Ballroom became Polaris Hall, the formal term for the star itself. The 1930 building at 635 North Killingsworth Court in North Portland, an event hall since the 1920s-era roots of the neighbourhood, was purchased in 2017 by Jim Brunberg and Kevin Cradock, the owners of Mississippi Studios and Revolution Hall. The room is a 4,500-square-foot vintage ballroom - hardwood floors, 15-foot ceilings, warm-toned walls and a proper stage - holding about 200 people standing. A renovation in early 2018 restored the vaulted ceiling the building once had while keeping the period character the new owners explicitly promised to preserve. Programming splits three ways: roughly 30 concerts a year, mostly of the quieter and acoustic variety that suits the room; community-oriented events overflowing from the owners' other venues; and private rentals, for which the hall's wedding trade long predates the name change. The opening concert under the new flag was a release show for Portland singer-songwriter Shelley Short on 25 August 2017. House rules follow the Mississippi Studios template: general admission, mostly standing shows, night events 21-plus unless marked otherwise, and an anti-scalping regime of ticket limits and order-scrubbing the operators apply across their venues. The setting is a residential corner of North Portland on the edge of the Portland Community College Cascade campus, a few blocks off Interstate 5, surrounded by the vintage shops and coffee rooms of the Killingsworth strip - a neighbourhood room by design, with central heating, air conditioning and ADA access. Within the owners' portfolio it fills the smallest slot - below the 300-capacity Mississippi Studios and the 1,400-capacity Revolution Hall - giving Portland acts a stepping-stone room under the same booking roof.
