RBC Amphitheatre

Three beer companies and a bank have now had their names on Toronto's lakeside stage. RBC Amphitheatre at 909 Lake Shore Boulevard West on the Ontario Place grounds opened on 18 May 1995 as the Molson Amphitheatre, became the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre in 2010, Budweiser Stage in 2017, and took its current name on 28 October 2025 under a Live Nation partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada running to 2038. The CA$15-million venue, designed by Michael Moxam, replaced the Forum - the beloved 1971 revolving-stage bowl at Ontario Place - with a conventional amphitheatre holding roughly 16,100: 5,500 reserved seats under a 60-foot roof, 3,500 more under open sky, 7,000 on the lawn and an unreserved 1,000-capacity floor. It has been the city's summer concert default ever since, open May to October and unusually busy for its format - about 75 shows a year, roughly double the average for North American amphitheatres, with dressing rooms whose skyline views artists reliably mention. The name change fronts a much larger project: a 100-million-dollar redevelopment designed by PARTISANS and Gensler will close the venue in fall 2027 and rebuild it as a three-storey, year-round hall with an operable roof canopy - reopening outdoors in summer 2029 with capacity expanded to about 18,000, then debuting a 9,000-capacity enclosed winter configuration by summer 2030. The rebuilt lawn will extend further east to hold 9,000 on its own, and Live Nation projects more than 1.5 million fans a year once the four-season operation is running - part of the broader, contested remaking of the Ontario Place islands. Until the construction fences go up, the amphitheatre remains what it has been for three decades: the stop where every summer shed tour plays Toronto, reachable by the 509 and 511 streetcars along the western waterfront.
