It was a boxing gym for neighbourhood kids before the amps moved in. Ren's Den at 900 4th Street SW in Albuquerque's Barelas neighbourhood is one of the city's busiest DIY venues, an all-ages room run as a family business by owner Aaron Barreda with his daughter as equal partner and Anjo Garcia handling sound and booking. The three transformed the small gym into a performance space that now anchors the heavier end of the local scene: the calendar runs punk in its many incarnations, black and death metal, grindcore and hardcore, with touring bands threaded between local bills most weeks of the year. The all-ages policy is the point rather than a technicality. Barreda has been outspoken about giving young fans a safe room to see innovative music from across the country, and about safety questions in the scene at large - a venue philosophy built around the kids who fill the floor. The house ethic extends to the rest of the city's underground: rather than competing with rooms like the Minnow or Black Wall Gallery, Ren's Den promotes collaboration between venues, passing along bands that do not fit its calendar so they land on somebody's stage. Shows can be held any night of the week, bookings span all genres despite the heavy core, and the venue's standing in the community earned it a feature as one of Albuquerque's most popular DIY spots within a few years of opening. The Barelas location puts the room in one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, just south of downtown along the historic 4th Street corridor and a short walk from the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The room's calendar tells the collaboration story in practice: touring grindcore packages from out of state land on the same week as local benefit bills, and the bookings run through Garcia's network rather than a promoter, which keeps door prices low and the split honest for the bands.
