The oldest theatre in San Jose sells two-item minimums now. The San Jose Improv at 62 South Second Street occupies the Jose Theatre, opened on 3 October 1904 with six acts of vaudeville and moving pictures - a house built under the ownership of David Jacks, the Monterey landowner whose name survives on Monterey Jack cheese. The Jose ran vaudeville and film through a 1933 remodel and decades as a downtown cinema before closing in May 1991 with a screening of Home Alone; the city designated the building a historic landmark in 1990, preserving it through the decade it sat dark. The rescue came through comedy: in June 2001 the city council signed a ten-year lease with the Improv chain, and the club opened in spring 2002 after a restoration that returned the century-old interior to working order. The room seats about 450 across a 300-capacity main showroom and a 150-seat balcony, with headliners playing Tuesday through Sunday and multiple weekend shows - the standard Improv model of dinner service, drink minimums and touring names in an intimate house. A later refresh by Westgroup Designs for owner Levity Live updated the club while keeping the architectural details - Carrara marble in the lobby, wrought-iron railings matching the exterior balcony, deco-inspired lighting honouring the building's playhouse era. The downtown location earns its corporate trade: walking distance from the convention centre, paid lots across the street, and a private-event calendar of receptions and fundraisers that keeps the 1904 stage lit between comedy runs. The stage has carried the club circuit's biggest names on their arena climbs - Dave Chappelle, Ali Wong, Jo Koy and Anjelah Johnson have all worked out material in the room - and the 1904 balcony rail gives the second level the closest sightlines of any comedy club in the Bay Area.
