SAP Center at San Jose

The circus opened it, the Sharks named it. SAP Center at 525 West Santa Clara Street in downtown San Jose opened on 7 September 1993 with Ringling Brothers under its space-frame roof - a 162.5-million-dollar, city-owned arena whose glass pyramid entry and ribbed stainless-steel skin earned it instant landmark status at the west end of downtown. The building exists because the Gund brothers' arena men rejected the first drawings: the roof was pushed up, capacity raised, luxury suites expanded into the semicircular rings that bulge from the sides, and toxic lampblack from an old power plant entombed under the north parking lot before the Sharks could move in from the Cow Palace. The nickname arrived with the tenant - the Shark Tank holds 17,435 for hockey and up to 19,190 for concerts - and the name has cycled with Valley fortunes: San Jose Arena, Compaq Center in 2001, HP Pavilion in 2002 and SAP Center since July 2013. The concert ledger spans Sinatra-era survivors to streaming-era headliners - Streisand, the Stones, Springsteen, Prince, Adele, Beyonce, Harry Styles and the Three Tenors among 35 million visitors across three decades. The building has collected the market's marquee events besides: NHL All-Star games, NCAA tournament rounds, Olympic gymnastics trials, and a 59-suite corporate inventory that made it Silicon Valley's de facto boardroom-with-a-scoreboard. Diridon Station sits across the street with Caltrain, Amtrak and light rail - transit adjacency most American arenas only promise - and the planned Google district around the station would wrap the Tank in the densest development in city history. The building's event mix runs past 170 dates a year - Disney on Ice, WWE, UFC, Barracuda AHL hockey in some seasons and the annual SJSU commencement - and the city-owned structure has been through rolling upgrades: new videoboards, LED sports lighting and refreshed suites keeping a 1993 building competitive with new-build arenas.
